What is the triple marker test?

Triple marker test or triple screening test is a test which is done in second a master of pregnancy.

This test is for classifying the fetus at high or low risk of chromosomal abnormalities.It analyzes how likely an unborn baby is to have certain genetic disorders

What tests are included in the tipple marker test?

In this test following things are measured-

  • alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)
  • human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)
  • estriol

A triple marker screen test takes a sample of blood and detects the levels of AFP, HCG, and estriol in it.

Who benefits from the triple marker screen test?

Triple marker screen tests help prospective parents prepare and assess options. They also alert doctors to watch a fetus more closely for other signs of complications.

The test is often most recommended for women who:

  • are 35 years old or older
  • a family history of birth defects
  • diabetes and use insulin
  • have been exposed to high levels of radiation
  • had a viral infection during pregnancy

When is this test done?

This test is usually done between 15 to 18 weeks of pregnancy. for this test, our blood sample is required which is usually collected from the arm of the patient.

no special instruction is given before the tests and samples can be taken at any time as per the convenience of the patient.

How is this test interpreted if the pregnant female has low levels of alpha-fetoprotein?

if the pregnant female has low levels of alpha-fetoprotein then it indicates neural tube defects in the fetus. if alpha-fetoprotein and still is low but beta HCG is high then it indicates a possibility of Down syndrome in the fetus.

if the levels of all the three are low then it indicates the possibility of Edwards syndrome in the witters.

What should be done if the triple marker test indicates a chromosomal abnormality?

in the fetus, this test is only a screening test. So more confirmatory tests are required before establishing that the fetus has chromosomal abnormalities.

these tests are a mere synthesis and chorionic villus sampling however these tests carry a small risk of miscarriage. so the decision to opt for these confirmatory tests should be made very carefully.
